Dr. Gordon Wong

Regular eye exams are an important part of preventative care, as many eye problems don’t initially show symptoms. Dr. Wong can catch these conditions in their earliest stages when treatment is most conservative and you’re more likely to prevent vision loss.

  • Dr. Wong specializes in refractive surgery consultation, surgical co-management, and specialty contact lenses.
  • Dr. Wong has been in practice since 1991. In addition to being the owner of Uptown Optometry, he serves as co-clinical director of NVision Laser Eye Center of La Jolla, is an expert examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, and is a clinical preceptor for the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

Review History

Dr. Wong will inquire about your overall health and your family’s history of eye or health conditions. He will also ask you about any vision problems you’re experiencing and when they began. Your answers to his questions will help determine which tests he performs.

Visual Acuity Test

Dr. Wong will conduct a visual acuity test to determine the sharpness and clarity of each eye. This test may involve reading letters from a chart from a distance with each eye.

Determine Prescription

Dr. Wong will use our Topcon auto-refractometer to see how light focuses on each retina. This test will determine your prescription.

Other Tests

If you mention vision problems, Dr. Wong may perform other tests to determine if you have an eye disease. These tests can measure your depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movement, peripheral vision, curvature of the cornea, and more.

Recommendations

Dr. Wong will diagnose you and recommend treatment options. If you require a specialist, we can put you in touch with a practitioner we trust.

Sophisticated Tech for Optimal Care

We use the latest developments in the field of eye care so appointments are more comfortable and your corrective lenses are more effective.

  • The Optos Nikon high-resolution retinal camera captures images of your retina while avoiding the need for uncomfortable pupil dilation.
  • The Topcon automated visual field analyzer detects serious eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, damage to the optic nerve, and more.
  • Our Essilor Eye-Ruler and VR headset take progressive lens measurements for accurate prescriptions.
  • Our Topcon auto-refractometer measures refractive error so your prescription is precise.

FAQ About Eye Exams

What’s included in an annual eye exam?

Your eye exam will involve a series of tests that determine your prescription and screen you for harmful eye conditions. Our optometrists will also answer any questions you have about your vision and corrective lens options.

What’s the harm in not attending routine eye exams?

Routine eye exams help detect harmful problems in their earliest stages. When left untreated, conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy can progress and cause widespread damage to the eye. When this occurs, you may experience symptoms like blurry vision, vision loss, and even blindness.

How often do I need to visit the optometrist?

Once a year or once every other year is enough for most patients. However, if you have an existing eye condition or certain risk factors, our optometrists may recommend that you visit us for an eye exam more often. If you notice changes in your vision or eye discomfort before it’s time for your next appointment, schedule an exam with Dr. Wong.

When should my child have an eye exam?

Your child should have their first eye exam at about 6-12 months to ensure their eyes are developing correctly. They should have another exam before starting school, then routine eye exams throughout their childhood as recommended by an optometrist.

"This is just a great office.”

“I had my appointment today with Dr. Daoud. I felt comfortable with her immediately. She is very thorough, and had a nice way of explaining things in a way I could understand.  I will continue to be her patient; and look forward to seeing her next year.  I like the selection of frames, and the great service from the receptionists.  If Dr. Daoud is not working that day, I've heard great things about Dr. Wong!  This is just a great office.”
